Juvenile Arthritis to Rheumatoid Arthritis to PREMATURE DEATH???
My daughter was diagnosed with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis when she was 4 yrs old. She is one of the 10% (?) of kids who don’t grow out of it (so is it now RA?) and, at the age of 20, it affects virtually every joint in her body, with permanent damage to her wrists and neck. From very early on, her mantra was “I will NOT allow my arthritis to rule my life” and, although obviously some activities are closed to her, she tries very hard to remain true to this. However, the other day, she was researching Rheumatoid Arthritis in order to write a newspaper article and, amongst the information she received, was one study (conducted among those who were diagnosed with RA at the age of 50) which said that RA could lead to premature death. One of the causes of death that was sited was renal failure – my daughter is already experiencing kidney problems that, so far, have not been satisfactorily diagnosed. Obviously, she/we are VERY scared. Is there any rheumatologist out there?
Why can’t she speak to her consultant? She lives in Southern Ireland and is experiencing problems with her employers due to the sick leave she has taken (actually, perhaps only 10 days in the last 3 months – pretty good, given her condition?!) and has therefore delayed her next appointment.
Hmmm – thanx ‘smartypants’ – but methotrexate did nothing for her.
Can you diagnose me?? (Lupus vs arthritis?)?
I’m 16 years old,Female.
On the day May 30, 2009 I had extreme pain in my left shoulder. I did nothing physical that day.
It was just all of a sudden. That night, any small movement i would make with my shoulder would
hurt so bad, I would scream. My shoulder was not red but it was a bit swollen. The next day the pain
wasn’t as excruciating as the night before. The pain in my shoulder lasted 3 days, it gradually went
away.
A week or so after that I woke up with stiff a very stiff body, I was stiff until an hour or two.
My hands were in pain, my knuckles were swollen, red, and tender to the touch.
Weeks after that, my feet were in pain, particularly in my heel and the knuckles of my toes.
( the pain in my heels ever since that day has never stopped hurting. In fact, its been harder to
take walks. I can no longer jump. If i try to walk in a straight line I don’t have any balance.)
All of these pains slowly are taking over me. Its difficult to do my daily activities.
Like walking, tying my hair, getting up, etc. Just your day-to-day doings.
that’s the Just of it.
Oh and this issue has been going on for 7 to 8 months now.
And when i went to the ER the doctor diagnosed me as arthritis but she said shes not too sure.
she came to that conclusion due to something in my blood (i dint know the details)
Now, I’ve researched for quite some time now and I’ve come to the conclusion that
I have Poly-articular juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.
Though rheumatoid arthritis seems incredibly similar to lupus…
Is it lupus or arthritis?…
Or what do you think I have?…
P.S. My face gets rashes, irritated, dry patches but as soon as I cleanse my face, it goes back
to normal.
Hi there, I would love to help you and your daughter with this, and be more than happy to provide her with any information she is looking for on her research, I myself have had severe RA for 7 years now and it has put me in a wheel chair and cost me a great paying job, a house, my pride and my dignity just to name a few and I have a message board with Ra information as well as a chat room where we deal with diseases like Ra and many others and all sorts of problems, so if you want to email me at poohinmissouri@yahoo.com and I will provide you with the links and also be happy to help with any info that I can
I don’t know what to do with my broken teeth. ?
I asked a question about tooth replacements the other day. Since then I’ve been doing alot of research on it. I had juvenile rheumatoid arthritis as a child. I recently got into an accident and busted 2 of my teeth. So I’m facing life without 2 teeth (mind you, I’m 23), or tooth replacements. The reading I’ve been doing says that you should be in good systemic health for a tooth replacement, and anything rheumatic is considered systemic. I’m not sure if I should risk potential problems, or just get a denture for those 2 teeth. My oral surgeon said there’s no way a tooth replacement could cause problems, but then why does some research say otherwise? I guess I’m at a crossroads of what decision to make. What do you think? (fyi: the teeth in question are bottom pre-molars)
Definitely go with the implants! I am a dental professional, and I know all about implants, bridges, dentures etc. At your age I wouldn’t even hesitate, no questions asked, hands down, get an implant! I wouldn’t think that your history of JRA would be an issue but the best thing would be to ask the person doing the implant. I would also definitely suggest having an oral surgeon OR periodontist place the implants. Some general dentists place implants as well sometimes for a couple hundred dollars cheaper, but if it were me, I’d spend the extra money and go for the specialist for sure.
Bridges are an option however you have you remove a lot of tooth structure from the teeth on either side of the teeth that you need to be removed and that wouldn’t be advised unless those teeth are already heavily filled. Bridges can get decay underneath them and need to be replaced, and with you being so young, I’d bet you’d have to get it replaced a few times in your life.
I honestly wouldn’t even have to consider the options if this were me, or someone close to me…..go with the implants and don’t look back! I’ve had many patients over the years go get implants and I’ve never heard any complaints! At any rate, go for a consultation with whichever specialist you are referred to, and they will give you all the info you need!
How safe are tooth implants?
I got into a bicycle accident yesterday. Landed on my chin. I got 7 stitches to close my chin up, and I have a small jaw fracture. I saw the dentist today, who referred me to an oral surgeon. I didn’t lose any teeth in the accident, however, 2 of them were cracked, and there are horizontal fractures on both. The dentist thinks she’ll have to pull them both. I’m 23, so there’s no way I’m ready to go through life missing teeth, so implants are an option. How safe are they? Infection wise? Does anybody have tooth implants? Or do any dental professionals know any research on it? My mom thinks my history of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis could cause a relapse with something foreign in my body.
How do I know if my doctors right?
I’ve been having very bad joint pain. I also have numerous other symptomss, but this is the one I am focused on the most. I did research online, and most of my symptoms have come up to be Systemic Rheumatoid Juvenile Arthritis, so I saw a rheumatoidologist and she gave me a blood test to see if Rheumatoid Factor was in my blood.
Now, I did my research, and every site said if you had Systemic Rheumatoid, then almost ALL of the tests won’t show Rheumatoid factor. When she tested me, I was at about 12%. She said it was really low, and not logical.
If it didn’t show, doesn’t that mean that it can still be Systemic?
How do I know that she didn’t consider that fact?

definitely LUPUS.its clinical manifestations resemble Rheumatoid Arthritis and sometimes people are misdiagnosed in the early course of the disease.
