Give serious consideration to using crutches all the time. A cane is fine but really canes weren’t designed to take weight off a painful leg – they were designed to steady your gait. And, if you rely on a cane, the constant pressure may cause problems with your hand or wrist. That’s why a pair of good forearm crutches are your best bet.

I have both hips replaced and spent several years taking NSAIDS. They worked for awhile. The best way to take them is to take them every day instead of “popping” them when you think you are going to have to walk. My drug of choice was Aleve and I took (on doctor’s advice) double the OTC dose twice a day. It really helped. NSAIDS taken on a daily basis are not without possible side effects so it is important to consult with your doctor before you begin such a regimen. However, it worked for me for a very long time.

PS: are you eligible to have PAO (peri-acetabular osteotomy) surgery to treat your dysplasia? If so, it is doubly important to use the crutches until you have your surgery.

You could try the human device actipatch. The company is in the process of developing it for the veterinary market as well…but currently its only for humans (it is the same device). Read more about it at http://www.actipatchpaintherapy.com or http://www.actipatchstore.com. It is completely natural and safe.

Arthritis pain relief for 6 year old Black Lab?
My black lab, Reilly, suffers from arthritis in his right hip. With the colder weather, he seems to limp more and have more inflammation in the area. Is there anything that a vet can prescribe to relieve these symptoms? Any natural treatments?

Are there any natural forms of pain relief for a dog with arthritis?
My 8 year old husky has arthritis in her hips, are there any natural forms of pain relief that might help her? Massage, herbs, etc?
I ask because my dog has been on both Rimadyl (spelling?) and Deramax and they both make her throw up, so I was just wondering if there was something natural that would help her.

Need nonsurgical pain relief for hip dysplasia/arthritis pain.?
Hip replacement surgery is not an option right now, but walking is getting to be fairly painful. I have tried taking an anti-inflammatory before going shopping but it doesn’t appear to help much anymore. Is there anything else that can be done prior to shopping or a day out that will help?

“Natural”? Do you mean drug-free options? If so, look into glucosamine/chondroiton supplements. Ask your veterinarian about dosing for her, and where to get it.

Glucosamine arthritis relief for my Shelty?
does anyone have experience with this in releiving arthritis pain on a shelty? she isn’t crying from pain but she is moving very slowly with hardness in her hips. she’s 9 years old. reputable and inexpensive place to buy the medication?

Glucosamine and condroitn sulphate are to help rebuild cartilage they are not pain medications. Over time they will help improve mobility but you may want to address this with your vet. There are some really good anti-inflammatory medications now for dogs. You may have to have some screening blood work done before starting them and you may be able to reduce the amount or discontinue them after your pet improves from being on the supplements. There are also some healthier alternatives like MSM. Discuss it with your vet or find a holistic vet to talk to about natural remedy’s.

Has anyone had cortisone injections in the hip joint? For arthritis or any other reason? Did it work??
I just had a cortisone injection today in my hip joint. I am only 25yrs old and have had a serious of hip surgeries. Turns out I could have arthritis already at my age. Has anyone had a cortisone injection in the hip to help with arhritis? Did it work? How long after the injection did it take to get pain relief? And how long did the shot last for? A few weeks? Months? Any help would truly be appreciated!!! Thanks!!!

Not the hip, but in my shoulder. The relief was almost immediate and 8 years out it has never been as bad again for either pain or range of motion. The old wives’ tale is true though about being able to tell when the weather will change.
