What can help my mom’s rheumatoid arthritis pain?
my mom has had rheumatoid arthritis for about 9 years now, and she had a knee replacement about 6 years ago… lately her arthritis has been causing her a lot of pain that she loses sleep over… medications that her doc gives her do not help. Are there any natural remedies or vitamins she can take to help ease the pain?

i have it too. i’m 18 and i was diagnosed when i was 15. i had to quit rowing (which was my life), and i missed a lot of school on days when it was too bad in my knees and hips to walk around. i kept my schoolbooks in the classrooms so i didnt have to carry them around, and i was allowed to take the elevator to my classes. i’ve taken lots of medications, some of which made my stomach so sick that i stopped taking them. i’ve done physical therapy (useless) and everything imaginable to make it better. i know it was really difficult for my mom to watch me hurting like i was. it’s been better the past year or so, but every couple of months it flares up and the joint damage in my hands makes it difficult to carry things or unscrew lids.

somehthing i tried which i think may have helped was changing my diet. i’ve always been a vegetarian and the research ive done has shown me that thats the best thing to do. its also possible that dairy or gluten can make it worse. i strongly suggest being on a completely vegetarian diet and seeing if things improve over several months.

i sympathize with your situation, but as far as solutions, i can’t tell you any more than your doctor can.

My sympathies to your mother (and you). I know all too well the pain of RA…

At the moment, I am in the same predicament. Lots of pain, loss of sleep. The pain makes sleeping impossible, and the loss of sleep makes the pain greater. It’s a vicious cycle.

All I can suggest is that your mother speak with her rheumatologist and/or family practitioner and tell them everything that is going on. They may be able to prescribe a sleep aid along with the pain meds.

Vitamins and supplements? I don’t know of anything that eliminates pain, although I *do* notice some lessening of pain when I eat fresh or frozen pineapple, or tart cherries. The bromelian in pineapple is an anti-inflammatory, and can be obtained as an OTC supplement. Ditto the cherry supplements. Both of these seem to be perfectly safe.

Some people swear by melatonin as a sleep aid, but I’ve heard also that it shouldn’t be taken with certain meds and for lengthy periods of time, so I hesitate to recommend this. Your mom should probably speak with her doctor about this. Perhaps a glass of warm milk?

Deep breathing, relaxation, prayer, meditation, white noise (a fan in the background) and sounds of nature (cd’s of waves crashing and waterfalls) can also contribute to a relaxed state and a restful sleep environment. It’s important that your mom be able to relax, as pain causes stress and stress increases pain … I know, it’s so hard, and my heart aches for her.

If your mom is able, a good long soak in a hot bath would do wonders, but 9 years into her disease this may no longer be a possibility. I know I can’t sink into a tub, and oh, how I wish.

Maybe your mother would appreciate a gentle massage from her very caring daughter. That or a hug would do wonders.

Hope I was able to help in some small way, and only the best to both of you.

As far as taking any sorts Aspirins type I wouldn’t suggest any because you should consult a Pharmacist first just to make sure that these medication can interact with the ones that you are already taking as well you may allergic .Secondly stay away from heroin unless you want to F …U. your life for good and become an addict .Thirdly you should ask your physician about cannabis . I have a friend that for the last 30 years has been puffing on cannabis it doesn’t take the pain away completely but seems to help . Try your question with your physician I would be scared to recommend anything as you are already on a lot of medication and besides I am not licensed only an observer and giving an opinion of what may be good to someone form my own life experience .

  6. StanTheMan says:

Great deal of pain is caused by inflammation. You must check your diet and eliminate the causing factors first. In my opinion, soft drinks are the worst.

Your diet should be mostly of live food, no microwaving and nothing artificial. Your condition can be completely reversed and your body will heal.

I know of two remedies that worked for many people with your condition and are doctor documented. Both are in the live food category, one very inexpensive, the other not so. I will take the liberty to send you free information on both directly to you and if you have any further questions you can contact us or any of the nurses on our team as well.

From the very bottom of my heart I wish you to get well again.

    Rheumatoid arthritis pain?
I’ve had it for years, but this winter is the worst. I dislike prescription drugs, because they cause other problems for me; I already have Chronic fatigue, so anything that makes other people mildly drowsy puts me right out. I have a life to live and work to do, so I can’t be asleep all the time.

Anything homeopathic you can recommend that helps lessen the pain? Tylenol Arthritis only works part of the time.

  8. Just Me says:

    Rheumatoid Arthritis Pain.?
I suffer Sero- RA, I have been in severe pain recently, to the point every step I take is complete agony, I cant get up or down on a chair without help, I use a crutch because I only have 1 for walking, I had my steroid Prednisolone dosage increased from 10mg daily to 20mg daily, I got given stronger pain medication due to the fact the Tramadol (Ultram) was as about as affective for me as paracetamol on its own, I now take Dihydrocodeine Continus 90mg tabs twice daily, I take Sulfasalazine 500mg twice daily for now slowly building upto 4 times daily, I take Omeprazole to combat the acid build up from the Prednisolone at 20mg per day, I take Ad Cal3 high strength Calcium and Vitamin D supplements, I take high dose Vitamin B,C Folic Acid and B12 supplements 1 daily.

But I am still experiencing pain. Today I even had to take more than 2 pain killer instead of 2 X 90mg Dihydrocodeine Continus tabs I have taken 3 so far. Although I cannow walk without my crutch the pain is still very bad. I am thinking of asking for the 120mg Dihydrocodeine Continus tabs when I see the Dr on Friday.

But is there any other pain medication I can take im in England? (We dont have Tylenol Arthritis over here nor do we have Vicodin unfortunantely), my Dr said he thinks im not quite at the stage for the second level Opiates like Oxycodone, but he says it is vey weird that the steroid are not reducing my pain. He said he would look into what else could be causing the pain, but could it still be my RA causing suh huge pain, I heard in some the Chronically severe pain can be debilitating.

It certainly felt like that for me the last 8 days. I even passed out from the pain which I told the Dr. I was even so tempted to get heroin t end the pain but lucky my mind told me wrong way to go so I stayed clear. The pain is the worse part of this disease for me now swelling is not much of a problem any more due to my steroids.

BTW my question on pain relief im allergic to all Aspirin based medicines, I cant take NSAIDS, Aspririn, Ibuprofen, Nurofen. I do use cannabis theraputically my Rheumatologist and Dr both know about this even doe its currently illegal fr medical use where I live. They acknowledge it does help people with Arthritis especially R.A due to swelling and pain managment.
Gentleman thanks for the comment, no I cant take Aspirin I have a bad allergy to all Aspirin based medicines including Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Nurofen, Anadin, NSAIDs Non Steroid Anti- Inflammatories especially Naproxen.

I do use cannabis my Consultant and my Dr Geeral Practitioner both know about this and it helps better than al the drugs the Dr gives me but it is not long lasting and I cant afford to keep buying cannabis, btw Cannabis is deemed to be of no medical value by politicians in the UK they lie about cannabis hence why they upgraded it to a Class B drug alongside illegal Codeine possession and Amphetamines.

I will speak to my Dr again tomorrow, he also has no idea about what Hydrocodne is, im going to give him a report my old Dr in LA, sent to me about it and how it is a good medicine choice for Arthritis sufferers. But not for long term fixes.

Hi,I have dealt with this all my life, and totally understand your pain and frustration.I have tried over 20 inflammatory arthritis medications, nothing helped. You can get more help from going to pain management, they help most people like us.There are 1 out of 4 patients that can’t be helped,I fit right in,lol.try pain management,do physical therapy, occupational therapy can teach you easier ways to do things without causing additional pain.See arthritis affects the joints, causes referred pain, you end up with muscle pain as it progresses.By 30,my lower jaw was eating away, had to take hip bone and put up there.Osteoporosis accompanies this type of arthritis also. There are drugs to slow the disease, but are risky.I tried Humira for 2 years and it caused a disease that lasted a year ,but almost cost me a lung and still may.I take hydrocodone 2 times a day for pain along with ultram 4times a day for pain, nothing takes it completely away, but it does help along with heating pads and hot bathes and thermal wraps are great.Be careful with your feet, not to gain too much weight and don’t over stress them as they can break easily.do take something to keep swelling down, even if you feel it isn’t working.gold shots helped me more then anything else has over the years, but when I took them later in life the gold went in my eyes and we had to stop, that does not happen to all people, trust me.Put some trust in God,he is the greatest healer of all for many people.Try not to let this take your life over.you have the disease, don’t let it have you..

RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS PAIN RELIEF??? ANY ADVICE IS APPRECIATED?
I am 24 and have been diagnosed with RA. I have been prescribed medication but nothing helps with the pain. It has made my life miserable. Just a year ago i was competing in races and ran everyday just for the love of it. Now i just have trouble standing up in the morning to get ready for work. Sometimes the pain is so bad i really cry. I feel like a big baby. I am married and it has also effected my wife because i am always in a bad mood because of this and i feel that she does not understand the pain it causes. last week my ankles felt like they were being eaten away. None of my meds work. Does anyone with RA take any meds that help with the pain? i would like to hear from you and would be very grateful for any advice or tips…. Thank you very much in advance.
