Separation Anxiety In Dogs: The Signs
By Martin Olliver
Does your dog have separation anxiety? Here are the tell-tale signs…
If your dog shadows your every movement around the house when you’re there, and sleeps on or near your bed, and IF it has trouble doing any different, it may have separation anxiety. Any destructive behavior will occur about 20 minutes to a half hour after you leave, so another way to figure it out is to plan on returning after that time on a few occasions. A dog with separation anxiety will not likely tolerate even being left in a separate room from you with a door closed between you.
Also the things they chew or destroy are most often “escape routes,” such as doors or windows (they believe may lead them directly to you). Also, they may munch items that they associate with you by smell. Although it can seem like a vindictive reaction, I assure you it’s usually more a nervous one.
If you return home to find that your dog pees or poops in a number of different locations in the house, AND they do not appear guilty about it when you return home, they may be manifesting their separation anxiety. The dog in question may be beyond the house training stage, and the fact of the different accident locations is a sign that they are not continually returning to a scent “marked” location and confusing it with an appropriate place to go.
A dog that barks or whines continually when you are away is also admitting – to your neighbors if not to you – that they have a bad case of separation anxiety.
Separation anxiety is one of the most common problems dogs develop, and is an unsurprising result of our practice of domesticating them. They are social animals, and they crave a pack environment. The good news is there are simple and proven solutions.
What are some signs that dogs may have arthritis?
My dogs has been not very active all day. Hes a 13 year old German Shepherd. He has been licking his paw almost all day. He has also been walking kind of awkward. Please tell me some signs of arthritis in dogs.
The only true way to tell the difference is with x-ray. The x-ray of an arthritic dog would look like degeneration (the “wearing out”) of joints while metastatic cancer to the bone would look like holes (for lack of a better explanation. If the vet already said it is arthritis, it probably is. Also, if it gets better throughout the day (stiff in the morning or after sleeping but better after being up and about after a while), that is also a sign of arthritis. The dog WOULD be in severe, constant pain if it were cancer plus there is usually weight loss, appetite loss, etc.
Our dog has the same problem. There are no fractures or brackadges, there is just a muscular disorder in the leg, and unfortunately there is no cure for it. It starts in the hip and works its way down to the leg, and then it gets associated with arthritis. It is commonly found in older dogs. You can have x-rays carried out, around £600-£700, though we found out they were inconclusive. There is some medication recommended by professionals; ‘Loxicom’ (approx. £45.00 inc. vat lasting from 4-5 weeks) and ‘Seraquin’ (approx. £46.00 inc. vat lasting for 4-5 weeks), there is a cheaper alternative; ‘Glucomosine’ (approx. £10.00 inc. vat 4-5 weeks). We have used ‘Loxicom’ and ‘Seraquin’, the medication for the last year or so has worked miracles for our dog.
Hope this helps!
P.S. I would recommend to give the dog insurance, if you have not already done so.
Difference between early signs of bone cancer vs arthritis?
Can anyone tell me the difference between early signs of bone cancer vs arthritis. My dog has arthritis probably diagnosed a year ago, he is 12 yrs old. But my dog sometimes I feel like he is in pain but he is not limping just struggling to go up the stairs. His appetite is great, weight is perfect, lymph-nodes are perfect. So I am 99% percent sure it is arthritis however I never did a x-ray. He had a chess x-ay 3months ago and his vet said his lungs looks amazing especially for his age. Blood work came out great too. But sometimes I see him struggling and it worries me. He is getting supplements for his arthritis but I just want to know what differences would I see if it did happen to be cancer in the bones (i know the obvious but what about the early signs again vs arthritis). Correct me if I am wrong but the early signs of bone cancer seems a bit similar to arthritis to me. Most of his struggles is in the mornings and night he does struggle to get up on the wood floors. Oh and on the chess x-ray she was able to see the arthritis on his spine. His vet feels it is not what I fear because he would be in so much more pain. Also I feel like he would of had full out cancer by now since it has been a year probably longer. Can anyone shed some light on this?
thank you
LOL, sweetie, every vet I have ever taken my dog to was either open on the weekends or had an emergency number to call. And I have lived in some SMALL towns.
Your dog could be in serious pain. Try a little harder to find a vet that can see your animal today.
Signs of arthritis in a dog?
My dog is a bit over 9 now (we think) we don’t know his exact age as we rescued him – but anyway.
A couple of months ago – My sister took my dog for a walk and he was limping extremly on his back left leg. Picking it up every two steps. It went away after about three weeks and we didn’t see it come back until a couple of days ago when he went out for a walk and it happened again?
He goes on two walks daily anyway – so he gets plenty of exercise ??
We don’t think he pulled a muscle because it lasts for two long?
Is it arthritis or has he just overworked his leg?
He was alright with us touching it – We cannot afford the vets ATM. How dare you judge and critisize me – and call me cruel when you read of people who BEAT their dogs and leave them to die – people like you who judge piss me off.
Glucosimine/chrondroitin has done alot of good for my dog but call your vet as it must be given by weight to be effective.Regular adult strength Bayer aspirin for pain but again has to be given by weight and only for a couple of days so use your best judgement.
Exercise daily!Let the dog do what it will without trying to push it.But you have to get the dog up and moving to loosen those joints and keep them from getting stiff.
Set a heating pad on medium and lay across hips for 10 minutes at a time do this 2-3 times a day especially during cold weather months.
And if you can get the dog in water.Swimming is the best exercise for arthritic dogs.Water holds the animal up and takes weight off the joints.
If that’s not do-able and you have the time to clean the mess then go get one of those things that hang over the side of the bathtub to turn a regular bath into a whirlpool.Forget what they’re called.
Fill the tub with warm water and get the dog to sit in it with that aimed across it’s hips.
My dog has arthritis in hips and 1 front leg.I also have osteoarthritis in both feet and ankles.
I’ve done everything except the tub thing. But my dogs have their own swimming pool {cattle trough} which has been huge help.
I have a friend that’s done the tub thing with good result it’s just a pain to clean up after.
Another thing I do that really seems appreciated is to give butt rubs.Massage the hips for at least 10 minutes 3 times a day.My dogs gotten to where he comes and leans his rear end on me when he wants a rub.
I’m lucky the sense that I know when he’s hurting before he shows signs of it cos I’m hurting and can start giving extra care so it won’t be so bad.
Cold weather, rain and seasonal changes all make it flair up.
What can you do for a dog with signs of arthritis?
My dog hurt her hip and the vet has said after an xray that she is showing deterieration in her hip. She is a lab collie cross and 7 years old. I have started giving her some olive oil with her food which I have been told is good. Any other ideas to help her joints?
Common signs are difficulty standing up and laying back down, can’t jump on furniture anymore, hard to go upstairs, crossing legs in the back, wobbly or shaky when standing, not wanting to run and play as much. Very common in older dogs, especially big dogs. There are good arthritis medicines made for dogs…as well as joint supplements. See your vet as soon as possible to help make your dog comfortable in his old age.
Has my dog got arthritis or a pulled muscle?
Recently my dog has shown signs of arthritis OR a pulled muscle. I have researched into both and the symptoms are very similar in both cases but i cannot distinguish which of the two he has. Obviously the first thing that may come to your mind is take him to the vets but it is Saturday and vets are not open until Monday so that will not be possible.
Is there ANY way in which i can distinguish which of the two he has
He has a limp when he gets out of bed, he is refraiming from jumping around which he normally does. He shows no sign of pain.
This is only just begun last night.
