5 Ways To Ease Root Canal Pain
By Afzaal Rafiq
Root canal pain is the pain you experience after having a root canal done at the dentists office. Basically a root canal is the removal of bacteria and the root of the tooth. The hollowed out tooth is then filled in to prevent further bacteria from entering the tooth and further decay damage. Modern dentistry techniques tend to minimize any pain that would be associated with a root canal procedure. Though it doesn’t occur in all root canals, it does occur. So what can you do when you are one of the unfortunate individuals to experience this pain?
1. Take an over the counter pain reliever such as ibuprofen. This will help relieve the swelling and pain you may be experiencing from the dentistry. Ibuprofen is regularly used as an anti-inflammatory and is available in most drug stores.
2. If your pain is very severe, ask your dentist for a prescription pain-killer. Asa precaution many dentists will give you the prescription in case the pain becomes too much to handle. ( This avoids having to go to the doctors office or returning to the dentist.)
3. Try a numbing gel like Oragel. This is the type of stuff you use when little kids are cutting teeth. It numbs the area, makes you drool rather badly but can defiantly help with the pain. Ensure you don’t use too much because excessive swallowing of the gel can cause you to stop breathing due to relaxed throat muscles.
4. The good old ice pack. As soon as you arrive home from the dentist apply an ice pack to the affected area. This works bot to numb the area and to reduce swelling that may result from the root canal.
5. Stick to a soft food or even liquid diet. You don’t want to be eating any hard food products with your irritated teeth and gums. Sticking to liquid will provide you nourishment with minimal pain. Plus if it is something cold it will help to relieve some of the swelling as well.
You can easily relieve root canal pain with some regular everyday techniques. If you are one of the unlucky few to suffer from root canal pain, take comfort in knowing ways to relieve your pain. If your pain becomes very severe or does not clear up within a few days contact your dentist as some bacteria may still be present within the affected tooth. And although it would be unpleasant to have to endure another root canal, it is a better alternative to severe infection and sickness.
Trust me i’ve been through the most severe toothaches that you will ever imagine. Both you and I know that toothache pains can be some of the most gut wrenching consistent throbbing pains and you will ever have to endure throughout your lifetime . Thank god there are natural remedies out there to compensate for the dentist, cure your pain and not put a dent in your pocket book.
1) Eating omega-3 rich cold water fish like salmon, herring, sardines, and others can help reduce joint inflammation, which is basically when the joints get larger and cause pain. If you eat it continually, it can reduce symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.
2) Applying a heated pad seems to help also. Just apply a heated pad to a joint for anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour (the timing I have read controversial information about. Some say 10-20 minutes, other say and hour or more… I’ll just tell you to try and see what works for you…)
3) Add foods that relieve the symptoms of arthritis These include: Fish (that are rich in omega-3′s, for reasons stated above), Ginger (reduces inflammation); alfalfa, seeds, legumes, and whole grains (which all add manganese, a nutrient that may be deficient in the bodies of those with arthritis); oysters, liver, beef, poultry, nuts, wheat bran, and wheat germ (which restore another nutrient, zinc, which may be deficient in the bodies of those with arthritis); chive, parsley, green onions, eel, beef, and mutton (which expel dampness that may cause the pain and promote the circulation of blood); Pearl Barley (which can cure inflammation), ginger tea (which eases pain in joints, stiffness, and warms up the body), sea cucumber (which is anti-inflammatory and has vitamins A, B1, B3, C, magnesium, and zinc), and mistletoe tea (which also expels wind-dampness, rheumatism, weakness in the back/knees, and the rigidity of limbs and joints). You may also drink juices such as pineapple juice, aloe vera juice, noni juice, carrot juice, or cabbage juice.
4) Some herbs you can take include: Cat’s Claw, Devil’s Claw, Parsley, Olive Leaves, Celery, Burdock root, boswellia, and others.
5) Foods to avoid would be those rich in omega-6′s, such as safflower or sunflower oils, which COULD fight the effects of omega-3′s.
6) Take hot baths and you may wish to add Esom salts, as these two together reduce pain and swelling.
7) Ice packs help by reducing inflammation, and thus pain.

How to get rid of arthritis+bursitis pain?
My mom has had problems with her knees all of her life. In June of this year, she broke one of her knee caps, but it healed. The doctor recently said she had arthritis and bursitis, and she’s been in a lot of pain recently. I don’t want her to keep popping pills to get rid of the pain… What are some ways to ease arthritis and bursitis pain? She uses like a heating pad and an ice pack in the evenings, but she still talks about how her knees hurt.
Thank you
Unfortunately, your mother MUST BE on an ANTI INFLAMMATORY like Advil, Motrin, Celebrex, Voltaren, Nuprin, Naprosen, etc. There are called NSAID’s (Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs).
She may also be on a pain killer like Percocet or Vicodan. It’s really important that if she is on a narcotic that she take it as prescribed every 4-8 hours AND NOT when she feels like it or on an as needed basis as this will cause an upset in her system as well as addiction.

If you hear any noises from this knee you don’t need to worry about. It’s just fluid moving around in the joint. If you have SWELLING or PUFFINESS then you need to see a doctor.
I would invest in a memory foam knee pillow or a wide enough pillow that provides you comfort so that you can sleep. The knee can freeze if you don’t keep it moving, so there is a list of exercises for you below. It can take weeks or extensive months….it’ll depend on whether or not you’ll need fluid released from the knee at a later date or surgery.
You need to keep the inflammation and pain down, so you must understand how to take the medication properly ~ you don’t take it as needed, you take it consistently every day until you feel better.
If the doctor says to take ibuprofen (not addictive) every 4 hours for 10 days, then you take it exactly this way and after 10 days, you’ll know if it feels better or still swollen and can then decide whether to continue with the anti inflammatories which are not addictive at a reduced amount or same amount.
The same goes with narcotics (percocet, vicodan, demerol, fentynal, morphine, &/or codeine). You take it as prescribed and not AS NEEDED this is how people develop an addiction because they wait for the pain then take the pill it doesn’t work so they pop another and the addiction starts.
As long as you take it as prescribed, your body will stabilize on it and you won’t feel loopy all the time or stoned. When you take it whenever your body doesn’t get a chance to metabolize it so you get “crashes” with cold sweats & a yo yo of emotions.
I suffered with pain for years and it took 10 years before I was given the pain protocol which clearly explains to you how to take your medication for the best results and least side effects. I attend the pain clinic at our hospital every 3-5 weeks for an infusion for pain, so I’m up on pain protocols.
Be aware in the future for the following symptoms for bursitis of the knee. This can occur anytime now that you’ve had an injury so be aware of “bursitis” and the symptoms. There doesn’t need to be a reason for BURSITIS, BUT it’s incredibly PAINFUL. You could find yourself in the emergency room for pain control because tylenol might not touch it.
Bursitis is the most painful and it’s difficult to bear weight. If you have an anti inflammatory, this will take down the swelling and pain fast. If it isn’t working then you need to see your doctor asap to try a different prescription.
You should take it as directed on the bottle. If it says every 4 hours, then you take it every 4 hours. If you take it as needed, you might as well not even waste the doctor’s time.
A lot of people think taking on as needed basis is better. It does nothing if it doesn’t retain a build up of the medication so it can attack the inflammation.
ANTI INFLAMMATORY ~ ADVIL MOTRIN CELEBREX VIOXX
Sit on the side of your bed with both legs draped over. Try to straighten the knee. You may hear crunching, popping, etc. Keep doing it, up and down, up and down, like a handle on a pump…you’ll need to keep doing it 4-6x a day.
You could also lie down on your bed. Lift your knees up and now try and move them like you would on a bicycle….keep doing it until all noise disappears from the knee ~ do not exceed 5 minutes.
Continue to do this, take anti inflammatories, ice the pain, and then warm the tendons.
***if you have puffy, swelling, and pressure increasing your pain, you may need to see the doctor to have the water drained.
