Natural ways to relieve arthritis pain?
My rheumatoid arthritis seems to be a lot worse lately. My diet hasn’t been very good lately, either. I hope just altering my diet will help, but what else can I do to ease the pain?

i have it too. i’m 18 and i was diagnosed when i was 15. i had to quit rowing (which was my life), and i missed a lot of school on days when it was too bad in my knees and hips to walk around. i kept my schoolbooks in the classrooms so i didnt have to carry them around, and i was allowed to take the elevator to my classes. i’ve taken lots of medications, some of which made my stomach so sick that i stopped taking them. i’ve done physical therapy (useless) and everything imaginable to make it better. i know it was really difficult for my mom to watch me hurting like i was. it’s been better the past year or so, but every couple of months it flares up and the joint damage in my hands makes it difficult to carry things or unscrew lids.

somehthing i tried which i think may have helped was changing my diet. i’ve always been a vegetarian and the research ive done has shown me that thats the best thing to do. its also possible that dairy or gluten can make it worse. i strongly suggest being on a completely vegetarian diet and seeing if things improve over several months.

i sympathize with your situation, but as far as solutions, i can’t tell you any more than your doctor can.

If you have Rheumatoid arthritis, you need to see a Rheumatologist, and taking motrin or tylenol, isn’t going to do the job. There are certain drugs designed especially for RA – and the sooner you get on them, the better off you will be. RA can do some major damage to your joints, but it can also affect your overall health, and the inflammation isn’t just isolated to your joints. Pain medication, just masks the pain, it doesn’t decrease the inflammation – while I understand the need to ease the pain, you need to be careful with your joints, if you mask the pain too much, you can do some damage to your joints. If you haven’t seen a Rheumatologist, please, please go see one, they are much better at assessing RA and prescribing the best treatment. Physical therapy can also be helpful – ask the Dr about it. Good luck
If you have osteo-arthritis there are still meds that may work better than motrin – again, a Rheumatologist may be better able to help you – please be careful with the NSAIDS (motrin etc) be sure you have some food in your stomach when you take these – there are some prescriptions that are easier on the stomach that work better than motrin.
If you do have RA, I recommend you learn as much as you possibly can about it – while it may be a little scary, the more you learn about it, and are able to discuss things with your Dr, the better off you will be – and remember, not everyone gets some of the worst parts of RA. But, thats why seeing a Rheumatologist and educating yourself is so important. Again, the sooner the better.

When the pain and inflammation are bad, advil liquid gel caps, 800mg 3x a day will help a lot, many people also take glucosamine for joint health, it is available almost in all pharmacy as well as grocery stores, also eating a real healthy diet with lots of fresh fruits and veggies that are high in antioxidants are supposed to help as well as soy products and calcium rich foods.

    Good luck.
